Fast Food is Bad Food
It is no surprise that the fast food industry is booming, right along with the rising rates of obesity. Fast food outlets spend billions of dollars each year on consumer advertisingenticing you to purchase those meals laden with fat, sugar and empty calories. Over the past 40 years, fast food has drastically changed the experience of dining out in North America and around the world. You do not even have to get out of your car; you can drive up, pick up your order and drive away as you eat on the run.
Fast food is cheap, quick and convenient. With the availability of big portions of fries and colas, many consumers feel they are getting a deal. However, did you know that a super-sized order of fries provides 540 calories and 26 grams of fat? And a large 32-ounce cola packs 310 calories? Unfortunately, that deal translates into extra body fat and an increased risk of obesity-related conditions.
Eating fast food once a week or less is probably not going to do you irreparable harm. However, if fast food is a staple of your diet, and fresh, unprocessed foods are the exception, then it is time to reverse this unhealthy habit. When you do go to a fast-food establishment, choose the healthier items: grilled chicken, veggie burger or salad with dressing on the side, instead of chicken nuggets, a fried fish sandwich, large and jumbo-size fries, sauces and high-fat addons such as cheese, chili and tartar sauce.
